Making Your Formal Dining Room Less Formal
Many people have large homes where they are lucky enough to have a formal dining room. However, many of these dining rooms go largely unused. Except for holidays and special parties, many people let their formal dining room sit empty. Just like every other room in the house, this room should be used more often than formal dinners and holidays.
If you have a small family, consider checking out the round dining room sets. If you buy one that has removable leaves, you can expand your table for holidays and such, but instead of keeping a huge table in there, a smaller one will more likely give you more reason to use this space.
If you change the decor to a less formal look for everyday use, you will be more likely to use it more often. Why not try holding informal parties in there, like for children. Try a baking party. Outfit the dining room with a kitchen hand mixer and line the table with cookie sheets and cutting boards. Let your kids make cookies and decorate them. You wont have to worry about not enough kitchen counter space.
When you change your dining room to a less formal space, you can actually bring your family closer. Utilizing the good china and silver can be fun for children. It will also teach them proper behavior for dining out. Show your children how fun it is to sit together as a family and enjoy a fancy dinner in a room that is not often used.
Eating dinner together brings a family closer, and many families today don’t bother because of busy schedules. But eating together just once or twice a week is better than nothing. It is a great place to start.
If you already have expensive dining room table sets in your dining room, and you are weary about using the room as a daily place to eat, why not invest in some fun chair covers as well as a table cloth. The chair covers will protect your expensive chairs from accidental spills and the table cloth will protect your table. All can be tossed into the laundry to be cleaned and used again. This is a great idea for those with children or even clumsy spouses.
If you just can’t manage to make your formal dining room into an every day eating room, try it once a week, or once a month even. Have a date night where you and your spouse dress up for a fancy dinner in your formal dining room. Light candles, play soft music, make a romantic evening of it. This is a great way to bring the two of you closer and utilize a rarely used space.

Jack Frost $2.95 Whatever you do, don’t confuse this Jack Frost with the 1997 comedic horror flick of the same name (its tagline: “He’s chillin… and killin’”). Frost’s life is unexpectedly cut short by a car accident, and a year after his death he comes back as–you guessed it–a snowman, t… |

Mister Magic $2.38 This 1975 release is a masterpiece of soul jazz, with keyboardist Bob James providing the arrangements for Grover Washington’s emotive saxophones. James’s opening “Earth Tones” has Washington playing soprano over a weave of percussion and electronics that suggests the influence of Miles Davis’s electric fusion work, while “Passion Flower,” a beautiful ballad by Duke Ellington’s composing partner, … |
